Hopelessly Devoted Upsets Susan's Girl

(from Delaware Park report)
Liberty Stable's Hopelessly Devoted swung to the outside leaving the second turn and blew by the Richetta to pull away to a smashing four-length win in the $175,300 Susan's Girl Breeders' Cup Stakes for 3-year old fillies.

Ridden by Roberto Alvarado Jr, Hopelessy Devoted was content to settle into stride along the inside through the early going as Richetta and Michael Gill's favored Pawyne Princess vied for the lead through a half of :47.72. Moving through the second turn those two were still contesting the pace but Alvarado was moving up quickly along the inside with Hopelessly Devoted.

Swinging to the outside after six furlongs of 1:12.08, Hopelessly Devoted burst past Richetta with a flourish and drew off smartly to mid-stretch. She was under steady handling to maintain a safe margin to the wire.

From Away rallied late to be second at 27-1 with Richetta fading to third, another 1 3/4 lengths back. Time for the 1 1/16 mile was 1:44.90.

The win was the third from the last 4 starts for Hopelessy Devoted, a Storm Creek filly from the Silver Buck mare Silver Treego bred in Florida and trained by Sandra Slivka. The $105,000 winner's share of the co-feature ran her career earnings to $167,385.

Hopeless Devoted, who paid $15.40, $7 and $6.80, is eligible for the $500,000 Delaware Oaks that will be run on July 17.

From Away returned $13 and $10.20 and Richetta $5.20. Pawyne Princess, the 8-5 choice finished last in the eight-horse field.
