Demon Warlock, a 13-1 shot ridden by Adalberto Lopez, beat favorite Poker Brad by a head to win the $75,000 Budweiser Emerald Handicap at Emerald Downs on Sunday.
Demon Warlock, a 4-year-old Washington-bred son of Demons Begone, covered the mile in 1:34 2/5 and paid $29.80, $8 and $5.20.
Trained by Terry Gillihan, Demon Warlock stalked front-runners Poker Brad and Willie the Cat throughout the early stages of the mile race. He drew even with Poker Brad in mid-stretch and narrowly prevailed at the wire to post his first career stakes race.
Demon Warlock collected $41,250 to increase his lifetime earnings to $177,860 for owners Tim and Allen Floyd and Mike Nist. It was the eighth win in 19 starts for the colt.
Poker Brad, who went off as the 6-5 betting choice, paid $3.20 and $2.60, while Briartic Gold returned $3.80 for the show.
Willie the Cat, winner of the Seattle and FOX Sports Net Handicap, entered the race a perfect 6-for-6 at Emerald Downs during his career. The 5-year-old gelding set the pace through the first half-mile before fading down the stretch and finishing fifth.
