Toogie too Shoes Sets Colonial Downs Mark

Fun Bunch Stable's Toogie too Shoes lowered the track record for 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Colonial Downs on Friday by more than a second.

Toogie too Shoes, a 4-year-old filly, crossed the wire in 1:47.81, breaking Our Toby's longstanding previous record of 1:48.95.

The 7-10 favorite in a field of five, Toogie too Shoes broke alertly under jockey Ryan Fogelsonger and dueled for early lead with Romantic Numbers and Mae and Ree while racing widest of the three. That trio was heads apart through an opening quarter of :23.06 and the duel continued along the backside as Toogie too Shoes established a head lead after a half in :46.18.

As the field hit the turn Toogie too Shoes edged away to a two-length lead and Fogelsonger was able to drop over to the rail. Toogie too Shoes kept up the quick pace around the turn, hitting the six-furlong point in 1:10.34. As they turned for home, Toogie too Shoes had opened up to a commanding five-length lead. She had plenty left in the tank for the stretch drive, easily holding off the late challenges from Mae and Ree and Romantic Numbers for a six-length triumph.

The first-level allowance was originally scheduled for 1 3/16 miles on the turf, but an afternoon thunderstorm forced the races off the turf. Our Toby's previous track record was set during Colonial's inaugural season in October 1997.

The win was Toogie too Shoes' second from ten lifetime starts. Carlos Garcia conditions the El Prado filly.
