New York Breeders Form Sale Company

Leading breeders and farms have formed the New York Breeders Sales Co., which will hold its first auction Sept. 28 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The sale will fill the slot vacated by the Saratoga autumn mixed Thoroughbred sale, though organizers of that sale are part of the new sale company.

The New York Breeders Sales Co. was formed the week of June 28. According to a release, founding shareholders include Questroyal Stud, McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, Contemporary Stud, Chestertown Farm, Frank Stronach, Metropolitan Stud, Liberty Stud, Edition Farm, Nightingale Farm, John Nerud, Walter Downey, Frank and Peggy Ariosta, Harry Landry, Raymond DeStefano, and Joanne and Jerry Nielsen Jr.

Dennis Brida, executive director of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders, said July 6 Betty Powell, Steve Lombardi, and Steve DiMauro also are involved.

The NYTB has attempted to get a sale company formed for about 25 years, Brida said. But because the new company is a for-profit corporation, and the NYTB is non-profit, the breeders' association will only offer administrative assistance at market rate.

There are 25 authorized shares in the new sale company.

"The breeders recognize the need for a sale at which New York breeders can market their horses in their natural market, and have founded an organization patterned on the Ocala Breeders Sales Co.," Brida said in a July 2 release.

About 350 mares, yearlings, weanlings, and horses of racing age are expected because the shareholders will sell at the venue. Among them is Jeffrey Minton of J.T. Minton Auctions, which offered the Saratoga fall sale the past two years.
