Newfoundland to Brookdale Farm Upon Retirement

Multiple graded stakes winner and Suburban Handicap (gr. I) runner-up Newfoundland will enter stud at Brookdale Farm near Versailles, Ky. upon his retirement, according to an announcement Monday from Sumaya U. S. Stable and Brookdale Farm.

Purchased for $3.3 million at the Keeneland September yearling sale, Newfoundland is a 4-year-old son of Storm Cat out of three-time grade I winner Clear Mandate, a daughter of Brookdale stallion Deputy Minister. Newfoundland is a full brother to current The Mighty Tiger, a $2.5 million Keeneland sale yearling graduate who has placed twice in group II company in Europe this year at age three, and is a half-brother to $3.2 million yearling purchase and stakes winner Full Mandate.

The colt has won seven of 18 starts and earned $458,784. In addition to finishing second by a neck to Peace Rules in the Suburban, Newfoundland has won the Skip Away Handicap (gr. III) and the Canadian Turf Handicap (gr. IIIT), all for trainer Todd Pletcher this year.

Pletcher is pointing Newfoundland toward the Whitney Handicap (gr. I) at Saratoga.

This horse has it all: a world-class pedigree; his yearling price speaks of his conformation and he is quickly becoming one of North America's top older runners," said Brookdales Fred Seitz. Were delighted to have him at Brookdale and appreciate the faith and trust of our good friend Oussama Aboughazaleh."
