Minus Roman Ruler, Chandtrue Stands Out

(from Hollywood Park report)
Unbeaten Chandtrue, whose three wins by a combined 15 1/2 lengths include a pair of stakes victories, figures as a heavy favorite against four challengers Saturday in the 65th running of the $100,000 Hollywood Juvenile Championship (gr. III) at Hollywood Park.

Victor Espinoza will be aboard the Florida-bred chestnut son of Yes It's True trained by Bob Hess Jr. in the six-furlong event for 2-year-olds. In 1977, the race sent victorious Affirmed on his way toward becoming racing's last Triple Crown winner the following year.

After breaking his maiden by 4 1/2 lengths at Hollywood Park on April 29, Chandtrue took the Willard Proctor Memorial Stakes by four lengths and the Haggin by seven to bring his earnings to $119,130 for owner Harold F. Greene.

"That was by far his best effort," trainer Hess said following the June 20 Haggin, in which he rallied from off the pace. "Before he ever ran, I thought he was going to be a one-dimensional rocket ship," Hess said. "Now I think we have a pretty nice little horse here. He's quite a nice horse."

Despite Chandtrue's impressive pair of previous victories, he was not favored in the Haggin, going off as the 3-2 second choice behind even-money favorite Actxecutive from trainer Bob Baffert's barn.

Actxecutive, never a factor in the Haggin when finishing in fourth place and eleven lengths behind Chandtrue, will try again on Saturday under jockey David Flores. Prior to the Haggin, the Florida-bred had won his only previous start by 10 1/2 lengths at Calder Race Course in Florida.

Baffert had planned to run his brilliant maiden winner Roman Ruler in the Juvenile, but the Kentucky-bred son of Fusaichi Pegasus came down with an abscessed foot that prevents his participation.

There will be no show wagering on the Juvenile with only four betting interests. Brian M. Carney races both Gentleman Count and Great Power, who are saddled by Nicholas Hines. It will be run as the third race on a nine-race card.
