Bedanken, Pettinger Team up to Win Modesty

Pin Oak Stable's odds-on favorite Bedanken made it two straight over the Arlington Park turf course with a pace-forcing three quarters of a length victory in the $150,000 Modesty Handicap (gr. IIIT) Saturday at Arlington Park.

Regular rider Don Pettinger made the trip in from Oklahoma to guide the daughter of Geri, who covered the 1 3/16-mile distance over firm turf in 1:57. Donnie Von Hemel trains the winner.

Bedanken edged up on the outside of Julie's Prize as the field crossed under the finish line for the first time to press the dawdling pace of :25.37, :50.67 and 1:15.10 through three-quarters of a mile before sprinting clear at the top of the lane. She opened up by 2 ½ lengths in mid-stretch and held off the late charge of Aud to register the victory.

"Looking on paper, I didn't think there would be a lot of pace," said Pettinger, who has been aboard Bedanken in all 16 of her races. "I wanted to let (Julie's Prize) go and tuck in but they were moving so slow under the wire the first time that I ended up going to the outside to let my filly be comfortable. When I asked her turning for home, she did it."

The Modesty, the final local prep for the Beverly D. Stakes (gr. IT) that will be run at Arlington on Aug. 14, was the third win in five starts this year for Bedanken. She earned $90,000 to boost her bankroll past the half million-dollar mark to $515,449. She owns a record of 11 victories in 16 trips to the post.

She won the Possibly Perfect at Arlington on the turf in her last start July 5.

Aud, last for more than a half mile, mounted a late bid in the stretch but was no match for the winner.

Shaconage finished third, followed by Delicatessa, Ocean Silk, Julie's Prize and Blue Sky Baby to complete the order of finish. Beret stumbled leaving the starting gate and lost her rider Chris Emigh, who was uninjured and rode the following race.

Bedanken, the 7-5 favorite, paid $4.80, $3.40 and $2.20. Aud returned $7.40 and $3.40. Shaconage paid $2.40.
