Hunt's Voz de Colegiala Nabs Osunitas 'Cap

(from Del Mar report)
Chilean-bred Voz de Colegiala, flying the famous green silks of owner Nelson Bunker Hunt, prevailed in a blanket finish under leading rider Tyler Baze to win the $80,150 Osunitas Handicap for older fillies and mares Wednesday at Del Mar.

Voz de Colegiala, providing Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally with his first victory of the Del Mar meeting, held on tenaciously in the final sixteenth to win by a half-length in 1:41 flat for the mile and one-sixteenth on the turf.

Makeup Artist was runner-up, a half-length in front of late-closing Shalini. The 3-5 choice Etoile Montante, the 123-pound top weight in the field of eight, was a nose behind Shalini at the wire after being bottled up on the inside with jockey Corey Nakatani.

Voz de Colegiala, a 5-year-old mare by Sayaret who carried 113 pounds to victory, returned $23.20, $8.60 and $6.60 while scoring her seventh triumph in 22 career outings. First money of $48,090 boosted the mare's total earnings to $149,419.

Makeup Artist, ridden by Mik Smith paid $4.60 and $4.40 and completed a $121 exacta. Shalini, with Jose Valdivia Jr. aboard, was $10.40 to show, rounding out a $581 trifecta.

David Cohen, a 19-year-old apprentice jockey, won the first race of his career aboard 45-1 shot Quiten Boy in the day's sixth race, a 6 1/2 furlong sprint. Quiten Boy returned $92.60. Cohen is a native of Las Vegas who began his career at Bay Meadows last April.

With no perfect tickets in the Pick Six, there will be a carryover of $159,263 for the wager on Thursday.
