Domestic Dispute May Avoid 'Dubai Bounce'

(from Del Mar notes)
Given more than a four-month rest since his indifferent effort in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I), Domestic Dispute should be able to avoid the so-called "Dubai Bounce" in Sunday's $200,000 Pat O'Brien Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) at Del Mar, trainer Patrick Gallagher believes.

The seven-furlong Pat O'Brien drew a strong field of eight, including dual grade I winner Pico Central, who carries top weight of 122 pounds in the main track feature.

Gallagher is confident that Domestic Dispute, a 4-year-old son of Unbridled's Song, will give a good account of himself. His last start came in the March 27 Dubai World Cup, where he finished a distant sixth.

"He's trained very well down here," Gallagher said. "He's coming up to the race nice. It looks like a very tough race."

The last time the colt ran seven furlongs was in last December's Malibu Stakes (gr. I) on Santa Anita's opening day. "I think he got beat only four or five lengths," the trainer said. "He had to wait a little bit around the turn. He got steadied there or he probably would have been a little bit closer.

The obvious favorite is Pico Central, who made a shambles of two good fields in New York earlier in the year while winning the Carter Handicap at Aqueduct and the Met Mile (both gr. I) at Belmont Park. The Brazilian-bred, trained by Brazilian Paulo Lobo, will have a new rider in David Flores, who is filling in for the injured Alex Solis, who rode him in the two New York victories. Flores was aboard when Pico Central won the San Carlos Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita March 7.

The sentimental favorite in the race will doubtless be Disturbingthepeace, who has won the Pat O'Brien the past two years for trainer Darrell Vienna and owners Rita and David Milch and Herrick Racing.
