Improving Suave has been added to the field for the $1 million Travers (gr. I) Aug. 28th, trainer Paul McGee announced. A colt by A.P. Indy-Urbane, by Citidancer, Suave won Churchill's Northern Dancer in June. Most recently he finished second to Rock Hard Ten in Hollywood Park's Swaps (gr. II) July 10. The colt's mare, Urbane, won Saratoga's John A. Morris (gr. I) – known now as the Personal Ensign – in August of 1996. "The timing of the Travers is good and I think he's a colt on the improve," said McGee from Kentucky. "He handles traveling well and I think he deserves a chance in a race like that. It's not going to be an easy spot, even with Smarty Jones retired, but I think my colt is at the top of his game and I know he'll love a mile and a quarter."
McGee said he has lined up Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day for the Travers. Day has won the Travers four times, including last year's running aboard Ten Most Wanted. Suave will fly to New York on Aug. 25.
