Big Field for Ocean Drive in Ballston Spa

Ocean Drive, hoping to bounce back from a distant third-place showing in the Diana Handicap (gr. IT), is entered against nine others in the $200,000 Ballston Spa Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT) Monday at Saratoga Race Course.

The Ballston Spa, for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, track conditions permitting, kicks off the final week of racing at Saratoga.

Ocean Drive has not been worse than third in her last seven starts for trainer Todd Pletcher.

She was a distant third in the Diana July 31, when she competed on a yielding Saratoga grass course. Pletcher hopes for firmer going Monday.

A 4-year-old daughter of Belong to Me, Ocean Drive has a pair of graded stakes wins this year, including one over her major Ballston Spa rival, Film Maker, by three-quarters of a length in the 1 1/16-mile Gallorette (gr. IIIT) at Pimlico in May.

Like Ocean Drive, Personal Legend figures to be close to the pace. Trained by Bobby Frankel, the daughter of 1998 Whitney Handicap (gr. I) winner Awesome Again  closed fast and won by a head over Lentil in the first division of the $66,000 De La Rose at the Spa on Aug. 11. Her victory came after a 2 ½-month layoff.

Donald A. Adams' Film Maker, winner of the All Along Breeders' Cup (gr. IIIT) at Colonial Downs, is in good form and should be in contention late in the race, according to trainer H. Graham Motion. Film Maker was assigned top weight of 120 pounds.

"She had a nice seven-furlong work the other morning at Fair Hill," Motion said. "She went pretty easily. She's been training well as of late. We'll have her lay off the pace like her last race, and then make a run for it."

Ramon Dominguez, who rode her to a 3 ¼-length victory over a year ago, will get the call to ride her today.

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, who won last year's Ballston Spa with Stylish, will try to repeat with Saud bin Khaled's Delta Princess. The mare is coming off a strong-closing allowance victory at Belmont by more than four lengths.

Bounding Charm and Misty Sixes are entered for the main track only.
