Bailey became Saratoga's all-time leading rider Aug. 6 when he took his 641st victory at the Spa. Last year he won his seventh Eclipse Award as top jockey. In 2003 he broke the North American record for purse earnings and also set a new mark for most stakes wins with 70. Bailey has claimed four consecutive Eclipse Awards.
Jockey Jerry Bailey will be sidelined for approximately four weeks after suffering a non-displaced hairline fracture of his left wrist. The Hall of Fame rider was at his Fort Lauderdale, Fla., home putting up storm windows to protect his residence from Hurricane Frances when he tumbled off a ladder. "He put his left hand out to break the fall, and knew right away something was wrong," said Ron Anderson, Bailey's agent. "He's in a cast up to his elbow, which will be cut down in 10 days. He's not in a lot of pain."Although Bailey will lose some key rides, such as Sightseek in the Ruffian Handicap (gr. I) Sept. 19, he should return in plenty of time to ride the Breeders' Cup program at Lone Star Park Oct. 30. "We've been lucky for the 4 1/2 years I've had him not to be interrupted except for kidney stones," Anderson said. "It's a bad time of year for this, but they go out there every day and sometimes things happen. What can you do?"
