Grade I Winner Friends Lake to Airdrie

Brereton C. Jones' Airdrie Stud has purchased grade I winner Friends Lake for stallion duty from Chester Broman Sr. and his wife, Mary. The 3-year-old son of A.P. Indy out of millionaire Antespend (by Spend a Buck) will stand for $15,000 live foal at the Midway, Ky., nursery.

A homebred for the Bromans, Friends Lake became one of the early favorites for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) after winning the $1-million Florida Derby (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park in March over a field that included The Cliff's Edge, Read the Footnotes, and Tapit. The Blood-Horse's Steve Haskin in his Derby Dozen called it a "huge victory." Unfortunately for his connections, Friends Lake failed to menace in the Run for the Roses and finished unplaced. Earlier that year, he ran third in the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream.

As a 2-year-old, Friends Lake broke his maiden at Saratoga and won the restricted, $100,000 Sleepy Hollow Stakes at Belmont Park.

Friends Lake, who raced once more after the Kentucky Derby, retired with three wins from seven starts and earnings of $696,400 for trainer John Kimmel. He is one of 16 stakes winner on the year for A.P. Indy, and both Antespend and her dam, Auspiciante, are multiple grade I winners.
