The richest autumn stakes schedule in the history of Churchill Downs will offer a roster of 12 events with total purses of $2.35- million during its Oct. 31-Nov. 27 "Fall Festival of Racing."
A new addition to the Churchill Downs stakes schedule, the Commonwealth Turf, which is scheduled for Nov. 14, going 1-1/16-miles on the Matt Winn Turf Course is restricted to 3-year-olds and, like the $150,000-added Mrs. Revere for fillies, gives grass runners a late season stakes opportunity against members of their age group before they move on to face older horses.
Headlining the "Big Four Weekend", during the three-day Thanksgiving holiday (Nov. 25-27) is the $500,000-added Clark Handicap (gr. II ), going 1 1/8-miles for 3-year-olds & up. The Clark will be contested Nov. 26.
The multi-stakes weekend also includes the $300,000-added Falls City Handicap (gr. II), a 1 1/8-mile race for fillies and mares ages 3 & up on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, and a pair of grade II races for juveniles on the Nov. 27 closing day program. The races for 2-year-olds are the $200,000-added Kentucky Jockey Club at 1 1/16-miles and the $200,000-added Golden Rod for fillies at the same distance.
The record stakes schedule will be launched Oct. 31 with the $150,000-added Ack Ack Handicap (gr. III). The 7 1/2-furlong event for 3-year-olds & up is scheduled as the featured event on a 10-race program on the opening day of the "Fall Festival of Racing."
