Josh's Madelyn went from last to first to earn her first graded-stakes win in Thursday's $224,200 Raven Run Stakes (gr. II) at Keeneland. Vision of Beauty was 1 1/4- lengths back for second, with Feline Story 9 1/2- back for third. The winner completed the seven-furlong distance in 1:22.86 over a muddy going.
Trained by Larry Jones for Michael Pressley and Jim Neidig, Josh's Madelyn bobbled slightly at the start while drifting out about five or six wide down the backside, and was last as Vision of Beauty led the 10-horse field through fractions of :21.73,:44.38, and 1:09.94. As the field rounded the turn for home, Josh's Madelyn, under jockey Justin Shepherd, began weaving her way through traffic, swinging eight wide in the lane to overtake Vision of Beauty nearing the wire.
"That was fantastic," Jones said following the race. "We love winning races at Keeneland. She loves the extended sprint - going one turn and getting a little more run. Justin (Shepherd) really knows how to push the gold button with this filly."
The winner returned $13.20, $6.20 and $4.60. Vision of Beauty paid $4.60 and $3.80, with Feline Story paying $3.80.
"She stumbled leaving the gate, and I found myself last early," Shepherd said. "It was probably a good thing, because
she came from out of it to win."
Josh's Madelyn entered the Raven Run off an impressive 11 1/2-length win Sept. 5 -- setting a new track record for seven furlongs at 1:21.37--at her home base of Ellis Park.
Bred in Kentucky by Mt. Brilliant Farm, Josh's Madelyn increased her career record to 14-6-2-1. The daughter of Quiet American
, out of the Housebuster mare Intend to Win, has earned $224,200.
