Trainer Bobby Frankel has 10 probable starters lined up for this year's Hollywood Park Turf Festival, the 14th edition of the six-race $1.75 million series of grass races Nov. 26-28. Frankel, the all-time leader in Turf Festival victories with 11, said Friday that he planned to enter Etoile Montante and Intercontinental in the $500,000 Matriarch (gr. IT) for fillies and mares at one mile. He plans to run Greek Sun in the $500,000 Hollywood Derby (gr. IT) at 1 1/4 miles. Those races are co-features on Nov. 28.Frankel plans to start Leroidesanimaux, Nothing to Lose and Three Valleys in the $400,000 Citation Handicap, upgraded to grade I for the first time, and Vitruvian, Kfar Daniel and Chattahoochee War in the $100,000 Generous Stakes (gr. IIIT) for 2-year-olds going a mile. Both races are Nov. 27.Finally, Frankel will enter Louvain in the $100,000 Miesque Stakes (gr. IIIT) for 2-year-old fillies on Nov. 26. The festival will also include the $150,000 Hollywood Turf Express (gr. IIIT) at 5 1/2 furlongs on Nov. 26.Frankel seeks his sixth Matriarch victory in nine years with the Juddmonte Farm's 4-year-old fillies Etoile Montante and Intercontinental. The latter is a half-sister to 2003 Matriarch winner Heat Haze, also trained by Frankel for Juddmonte.Intercontinental has won seven of 14 career starts. She is three-for-five this year, including graded stakes victories in the Jenny Wiley (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland and the Just A Game Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIT) at Belmont.Etoile Montante, a Group I winner from France who faded to 11th as the favorite in the Matriarch last year before joining the Frankel barn, comes off a victory in the Palomar Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIT) at Del Mar on Sept. 4. She has won seven of 15 starts.
Greek Sun could give Frankel a fourth victory in the Hollywood Derby, which would tie the trainer with the late Charlie Whittingham for the most. Greek Sun has won four of six starts, including the Cinema Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT) here in June and the Oak Tree Derby in his last start at Santa Anita on Oct. 17.Leroidesanimaux, one of Frankel's trio in the Citation at 1 1/16 miles, worked five furlongs on the main track Friday in 1:02 2/5. The Brazilian import won the Inglewood Handicap (gr. IIIT) in course-record time of 1:38.45 for 1 1/16 miles here in May and comes off a victory in the Morvich Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Santa Anita on Oct. 30.Nothing to Lose finished 11th in the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) when carried wide at Lone Star Park on Oct. 30 after capturing the Shadwell Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) at Keeneland in his previous outing. Three Valleys, a 3-year-old colt, will make his United States debut after winning two of seven starts in England for trainer Roger Charlton. Kfar Daniel and Vitruvian both broke their maidens at Belmont, while Chattahoochee War comes off a maiden triumph at Santa Anita. Flaxman Stable's Vitruvian won by 10 1/2 lengths at second asking on the main track Oct. 17. Amerman Racing Stables' Kfar Daniel finished sixth in the Pilgrim Stakes on the Belmont turf Oct. 24 in his last start.French import Louvain will make her United States debut in the Miesque after being purchased privately by Ed Gann and joining the Frankel stable three weeks ago. She recorded one first, two seconds and two thirds in five starts for Richard Gibson.
