Punch Appeal One to Beat in Delta Princess

Two-year-old filly Punch Appeal, a winner of five races in 2004, will try to cap a successful year with a victory in the rich $250,000 Boyd Gaming's Delta Princess Stakes at Delta Downs Saturday.

The one-mile main track event for juvenile fillies attracted a field of six. Punch Appeal, the 7-5 morning line favorite, will be taking on grades stakes winner Summer Raven in the Delta Princess, which shares top billing on the Delta Downs card with the $1 million Delta Jackpot.

To be ridden by Donnie Meche for record-setting trainer Steve Asmussen and owners Heiligbrodt Stable and Burning Day Farm, the Florida-bred Punch Appeal is coming off a nose victory in the Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6.

The daughter of Successful Appeal  also won Turfway Park's Kentucky Cup Juvenile Filles this year and has amassed earnings of $239,840 with five victories in eight starts. She started the year with trainer William White before transferring to Asmussen's barn for a fifth-place finish in the Spinaway (gr. II) at Saratoga in August.

The Todd Pletcher-trained Summer Raven was an front-running two-length winner of the Tempted Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct Nov. 2 in her last start. The daughter of Summer Squall has won two of six for owner Edgewood Farm, winning $118,910. Victor Espinoza takes over the mount for Stewart Elliott.
