Calhoun Ships Janeian West for Closing Day Dahlia

(from Hollywood Park notes)
Janeian, a New Zealand-bred mare who was shipped to Hollywood Park in July to capture the Royal Heroine Stakes (gr. IIIT), returns for a shot at the $150,000 Dahlia Handicap (gr. IIT) for fillies and mares on Monday.

Trainer Bret Calhoun flew the 6-year-old mare from his current base at Fair Grounds in Louisiana to California on Tuesday.

Janeian has been the beaten favorite in three races at Monmouth and Lone Star Park since she captured the Royal Heroine at one mile on turf. The consistent mare has recorded nine firsts, six seconds and six thirds in 35 starts and earned $368,114.

The Dahlia, the fall meeting's closing-day feature at 1 1/16 miles on turf, is also expected to attract Katdogawn, the defending champion and Royal Heroine runner-up, and Belleski, victorious in her last three starts.

A field of at least six is probable: Belleski, Corey Nakatani, 120 pounds; Janeian, Garrett Gomez, 118; Katdogawn, Kent Desormeaux, 117; Hoh Buzzard, David Flores, 116; Penny's Fortune, Jose Valdivia, Jr., 115, and Midwife, Rene Douglas, 112.
