Donovan is also scheduled to begin co-hosting Inside Racing, NYRA's weekly racing review show which airs every Monday night on Fox Sports New York. Current host John Imbriale is slated to retire next month.
Wednesday's Aqueduct card marked the debut of Eric Donovan as the full-time oddsmaker for all three New York Racing Association tracks. Donovan, who frequently substituted in recent years, took over for Don LaPlace, who set the morning line since early 2000."It's a challenge, it's something I look forward to," Donovan, 27, said. "I've always kind of been interested in mathematical sort of stuff. It's ironic because I have spent most of my career so far writing."Donovan has worked on the NYRA press staff since 1999.He is also the co-host of NYRA's daily handicapping show, Talkin' Horses, and realizes there will be differences between setting a line and selecting winners."When you're handicapping you're looking for the winner. When you're making the line, you're more or less trying to figure out what they're (the public) going to do."Donovan says he knows he will be in the line of fire for any glaring errors."The way I look at it is kind of like an umpire or an official," he said, "if you don't notice them, they must be doing a good job.
