Mr. Light's Gulfstream World Turf Mark Verified

Gulfstream Park has verified a world record set on its new turf course for one mile during the Jan. 3 opening day racing card.

After much discussion and debate, both the time – 1:31.41 – and distance of the final race Jan. 3 were certified Thursday. The architectural firm of Calvin, Giordano & Associates confirmed the distance and Teleview Racing Patrol Inc. approved the running time of the race.

The review process of the race – won by Argentine-bred Mr. Light – began Wednesday.

"We can give a surveyor's sign and seal saying that the starting gate was where it should have been, the finish line was where it should have been, and the rail was where it should have been," said Jim Thompson, P.E.

The rail for the one-mile turf course was set 60 feet out Monday.

According to Daily Racing Form's American Racing Manual, the clocking eclipses the previous world record of 1:31.63 set by Elusive Quality at Belmont Park on July 4, 1998.

Fractions for the $37,000 allowance race on firm going were :22.91 for the opening quarter-mile; :44.80 for the first half-mile; 1:07.76 for six furlongs, and 1:19.97 for seven furlongs.
