During the 2004 edition of the auction, Fusaichi Samurai brought $4.5 million to break the world record for a 2-year-old sold at public auction, and Dubai Dreamer also topped the previous mark when he sold for $3.1 million. The 2004 gross of $41,586,000 and average of $292,859 were both the highest ever for a sale of 2-year-olds in training.
Fasig-Tipton has catalogued 355 horses for its select sale of 2-year-olds in training at Calder Race Course in South Florida. The total is up 17.9% from 2004, when 301 were listed. This year's auction is scheduled for March 1, beginning at 11 a.m. (ET), with under tack shows set for Feb. 20 and 27. "Since we began accepting horses during our inspections last fall, we have felt the 2005 catalogue would be exceptional," said Fasig-Tipton president Walt Robertson in a prepared statement. "Because of its pinhooking history, our regular consignors were very active at the top end of the yearling sales. With five grade I winners in 2004, the sale has been very much in the public eye."Catalogues will be available online beginning Jan. 19 at the Fasig-Tipton Web site and from all Fasig-Tipton offices by January 26.
