Ghostzapper May Make 2005 Debut at Oaklawn

Edited from Santa Anita notes
Trainer Bobby Frankel said Jan. 17 Stronach Stable's 2004 Horse of the Year candidate Ghostzapper could make his 2005 debut at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas.

"He's galloping in Florida," Frankel said of the 5-year-old son of Awesome Again  who won last year's Breeders' Cup Classic – Powered by Dodge (gr. I). "He probably won't run until maybe April. It depends on when I get him ready. There's a good chance he might run at Oaklawn Park. I don't know. We'll play it by ear."

Frankel started only five horses the first two days of the current Santa Anita meet when unprecedented rains forced him to curtail standard training operations. "I was able to jog them and stuff like that," Frankel said. "But everybody's horses are in the same position."

Frankel, who has been honored as the outstanding trainer the last three years, again is among three finalists for an Eclipse Award, but he doesn't expect to win when the honors are announced Jan. 24 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills. The other finalists are Todd Pletcher and Steve Asmussen.

"(Todd) Pletcher will win it," Frankel said matter-of-factly. "I definitely will finish third and I agree with the voting. It's close, but it's time to give it to somebody else, you know."
