First Mares Confirmed In Foal to Speightstown

The first two mares have been confirmed in foal to Speightstown, the champion son of Gone West who is standing his first season at stud this year.

The first mare Speightstown  covered, Social Director, the dam of Marazine Breeders' Cup Stakes (Can-II) winner Dream About (by Deputy Minister), was confirmed in foal 18 days after being covered.

Speightstown  raced for Eugene and Laura Melnyk, and their mare, Licorish Village, was also confirmed in foal 16 days after being covered.

Speightstown , who won the Eclipse Award for sprinters for 2004, stands at Bill Casner and Kenny Troutt's WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky., in partnership with the Taylor family's Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky., and the Melnyks.

"He is covering his mares really well and we are obviously pleased to get the first mares confirmed in-foal," said WinStar's managing director Doug Cauthen.

Speightstown  had surgery for colic in early December but has completely recovered. He will be bred to 120 mares. Out of the Canadian champion Storm Cat mare Silken Cat, Speightstown  won 10 of 16 starts including the 2004 Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I).
