Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino will host the third edition of the 2-year-olds in training and paddock sale and its first at the new facility in Opelousas, La., on Sunday. The date is three weeks later than the auction's usual mid-March date because of the addition of a 2005 spring Quarter Horse meeting (February 5 – March 27).This year's sale has drawn a record number of 65 2-year-olds. In addition, 46 horses of racing age are expected to pass through the auction ring. All 2-year-olds passing through the sale ring will be eligible for the $75,000 estimated John Franks Memorial Sales Stakes on July 30."The catalog for this sale is amazing," said Charlotte Stemmans Clavier, president of Stemmans Inc., the auction's administrator. "In 2003, we had 37 2-year-olds and in 2004, we had 34. This year we have nearly doubled that to 65, and the quality of the stock is outstanding. This is by far the best sales catalogue I have ever seen in this state. You can see the positive effect slot machines at the tracks have had on this industry. Purses have increased, and breeders are increasing the quality of their breeding and racing stock."This will be the first sale conducted by Evangeline Downs utilizing its new sales license."I can't tell you how excited we are to finally be here and operating this sale at the new facility," said David Yount, Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino's executive director of racing operations. "We would like to thank the Agriculture Department for awarding us this license and, I promise you, we will put it to good use. We hope that this is the first of many sales we will hold here in Opelousas. Our plans are to develop a multi-purpose facility for these types of events and work with both the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association and the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association to hold some of their sales events on our property."An undertack show is scheduled for Saturday.
