Commanche Run, who entered stud at Coolmore Stud in Ireland, sired more than 1,000 foals and 15 of them have won stakes. He is best known in North America as the sire of Wavy Run, winner of the 1997 San Francisco Mile Handicap (gr. IIT). Wavy Run was a group winner in France and a multiple champion in Spain. Commanche Run, who was produced from the Ratification mare Volley, also sired a number of successful jumpers. His death came shortly after the death of U.S. millionaire and Astley Grange stallion Fourstars Allstar.
Commanche Run, a three-time group I winner who gave jockey Lester Piggott his record-setting 28th English classic win, died in late March at Astley Grange Farm Stud in Leicester County, England. The 24-year-old son of Run the Gantlet did not cover any mares this year.The distance-loving Commanche Run captured the 1984 classic Holsten Pils St. Leger Stakes (Eng-I) under Piggott and also scored group I wins in the following year's Benson and Hedges Gold Cup over top racemares Oh So Sharp and Triptych at York and the Phoenix Champion Stakes at Phoenix Park in Ireland. Over all, he won seven of 14 starts and earned $607,912 in three years of racing. Six of those wins came in stakes.
