Alkaased Impressive in Jockey Club Stakes

Favored Alkaased confidently won Sunday's Jockey Club Stakes (Eng-II) by 1 1/2 lengths over Gamut while gearing down at the end of the 1 1/2-mile event at Newmarket .

The Clovelly Farms-bred 5-year-old son of Kingmambo, guided to victory by Jimmy Fortune, trailed in the five-horse field until there was little more than two furlongs remaining. Responding quickly, Alkaased soared past the pacesetting Gamut to a clear advantage with an eighth of a mile to go and was ridden out. Gamut edged Bandari by a short head for second.

The 2-1 choice was making his 2005 debut for trainer Luca Cumani.

"He has done nothing but improve all along," Cumani told Racing Post. "He improved between three and four and has improved again between four and five. What I liked today was that he traveled so well and he was the last horse off the bridle."

Alkaased completed the 12-furong journey in 2:31.43 on a course that was mostly good and firm in places.

Cumani said the Coronation Cup (Eng-I) at Epsom Downs June 3 is a natural goal for Alkaased.

Warrsan was well beaten in fourth with Massif Centrale last.
