Canadian Champ One for Rose Returns

(from Woodbine report)
One for Rose, Sid Attard's million-dollar baby, is back and, according to the veteran trainer's assistant conditioner, Canada's two-time champion older mare still has plenty of fight left in her.

The 6 1/2-furlong, $150,000-added Hendrie Handicap (Can-III) Sunday at Woodbine might not present One for Rose with her most preferred route of ground, but Attard's barn knows better than to ever count out the daughter of Tejano Run.

"Every year, you wonder if she'll be as good as the one previous," said assistant trainer Chris Simpson, of the 2003 and 2004 Sovereign winner, who has $1,047,243 in purse earnings over a 22-race career. "But every year, she comes back and shows what she's all about."

Unraced as a 2-year-old, the $13,000 yearling purchase in 2000 almost didn't make it to Attard's barn.

When he first saw One for Rose, Attard, last year's champion conditioner at the Toronto oval, initially dismissed the idea of claiming the horse. Too big and clumsy, he thought.

If it weren't for a last-second plea from his son, Paul, also a trainer at Woodbine, Attard might not have entered a claim on the rangy and robust mare in 2002.

Five stakes triumphs, 12 career wins, and two Sovereigns later, he's certainly glad he did.

"The Tuccis (owners Carlo and Lou) called me and said, 'Sid, we like this horse. Go take a look and if you like her, claim her.' I'll tell you the truth, at first I didn't want her. Paul was with me before the race. He asked me who the claim was for and he said, 'Dad, do it. They're lucky.'"

One for Rose has missed one check in her three years at the races, a sixth-place finish on August 2, 2003.

The dark bay with "a bit of an attitude," according to Simpson, will compete at the shortest distance she's tried.

But One for Rose is anything but a wallflower, whatever the circumstances.

"She's unbelievable," praised Simpson. "She gives everything she's got and more. There's a little bit of concern with the distance, but we know what she's capable of."
