High Standards Meets Small Field in Barrera

(from Hollywood Park report)
Harris Farms' High Standards returns to dirt, where he won his first four starts, in Saturday's $150,000 Laz Barrera Memorial Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-olds covering seven furlongs at Hollywood Park.

The chestnut gelding will carry high weight of 123 pounds and be joined for the first time by Garrett Gomez, Hollywood Park's leading rider, against five rivals in the Barrera, named for the late Hall of Fame trainer.

Trained by Marty Jones, High Standards won both the Baldwin and San Pedro Stakes at Santa Anita this winter to extend his unbeaten streak to four before finishing fifth on grass in Hollywood Park's opening-night Harry Henson Stakes. In spite of the off-the-board showing, High Standards finished only 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner, Juliesugardaddy.

The California-bred son of High Brite has earned $165,337 during his brief career.

Storm Wolf, trained by Bruce Headley, has raced only three times, but he won his last two starts at Santa Anita by 7 and 7 1/2 lengths following a troubled maiden debut.

Positive Prize, who has been racing at Emerald Downs in Seattle, is coming off a one-length victory in the $100,000 Gottstein Futurity, his fourth win in five starts. The Kentucky-bred son of Prized has been transferred to the barn of Roger Stein.
