With the wind blowing and rain falling, B. Wayne Hughes' Greeley's Galaxy rolled through a three-furlong workout in :34.87 on a sloppy track at Pimlico Race Course Friday morning in preparation for Saturday's Preakness Stakes (gr. I).The work was overseen by Glen Stute, assistant to his father, trainer Warren Stute. Action was light on the track given the conditions, which persisted through late morning and were expected to last most of the afternoon. Temperatures were in the 50s and up to two inches of rain predicted, but the forecast called for mostly dry conditions and a high near 70 degrees on Preakness day.Greeley's Galaxy, by Mr. Greeley, also worked well in the slop at Churchill Downs May 14, seven days after his 11th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). In preparation for the Derby, Greeley's Galaxy worked five furlongs three days before the race.Greeley's Galaxy has won three of five starts, including the Illinois Derby (gr. II) at Hawthorne Race Course in April. He is one-for-one on a wet track. He has earned $358,480.Greeley's Galaxy, 15-1 in the morning line for the Preakness, will be ridden by David Flores for the first time.
