Cauthen Putting on a Four Star Show

Steve Cauthen, the only jockey to be a champion on both sides of the Atlantic, is returning to Britain later this month to attend the Goodwood meeting to mark a new sponsorship of one of the festival's major races. He will present the winner's trophy following the Four Star Sales Richmond Stakes, a group II contest for 2-year-olds run on the opening day of the meeting, July 29.

The £70,000 contest has been won by some smart horses in recent years, notably Bachir, Daggers Drawn, Sri Pekan, Dilum and Warning, although, strangely enough, Cauthen never managed to win the race as a jockey. He did enjoy victories in other big races at the meeting, notably the Goodwod Cup in 1982 on Heighlin and 1984 on Gildoran, and the Nassau Stakes in 1987 on Nom De Plume.

Four Star Sales is managed by Cauthen's brother, Kerry. He and three other Kentucky horsemen set up the company in 2002 with the aim of preparing and selling bloodstock at public auction.

They have enjoyed an immediate impact on the American market, and were among the top-10 consignors at Keeneland in September.

Four Star Sales will enter the European market for the first time, and have earmarked 16 yearlings to sell at Tattersalls in Newmarket.
