Stupendous Miss Posts Comeback in All Along

Headed at the quarter pole, favored Stupendous Miss battled back along the inside to post a one-length victory over Humoristic in the $200,000 Mede Cahaba All Along Breeders' Cup (gr. IIIT) at stormy Colonial Downs Saturday.

Ridden by Gary Stevens, Stupendous Miss, a 4-year-old Dynaformer mare had a seven-length lead after a half-mile but was passed by 2 1/2 lengths in the stretch by Dynamia before battling back. The closing Humoristic and Steve Hamilton edged Dynamia, ridden by Ryan Fogelsonger, by a neck for second.

The final time for the nine-furlong event for fillies and mares on yielding turf was 1:51.

Owned by Horizon Stable, the Wally Dollase-trained Stupendous Miss won her first stakes race in the United States. The victory was her third in five U.S. starts after beginning her career in France, where she won two of four. She earned $120,000 for the win.

Stupendous Miss was coming off a three-length win in a Churchill Downs optional allowance/claiming event. Her only previous stakes experience was a sixth-place showing, beaten three lengths by Megahertz, in the Santa Ana Handicap (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita March 20.

Saturday, she opened a four-length lead and widened it while recording fractions of :24 2/5 and 1:13 4/5. But Dynamia closed the gap quickly on the turn and was in command in upper stretch when Stupendous Miss came on again. Humoristic rallied five wide after being far back in the early going and finished gamely.

Gainsborough Farm LLC in Kentucky bred Stupendous Miss, who was produced by the Caerleon mare Subeen.

Stupendous Miss paid $5.20, $4.20, and $3.40. Humoristic returned $7.40 and $5.60. Dynamia's show was $4.80.

Then came Topiary, Sagitta Ra, Broad Hopes, Path of Thunder, 5-2 second choice Briviesca, Coquinerie, and Stormin' Daina. Class Yankee, Larrupin Gal, Snowdrops, and With Affection scratched.
