New York Stallion Personal Flag Euthanized

Personal Flag, who ranked as one of New York's top stallions for several years, was euthanized July 18 because of complications from the infirmities of old age. The 22-year-old son of Private Account was pensioned at Joe and Anne McMahon's McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds near Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Personal Flag, whose 34 stakes winners include millionaire Say Florida Sandy, began his stud career at John Hettinger's Akindale Farm near Pawling, N.Y., and later stood at Sugar Maple Farm in Poughquag, N.Y., and Prestonwood Farm near Versailles, Ky., before ending up at the McMahons' farm for the 1999 breeding season. Hettinger, who bought Personal Flag from breeder/owner Ogden Phipps, maintained an interest in Personal Flag to the end.

Say Florida Sandy, a grade II winner, turned out to be one of the best New York-breds of all time and a multiple champion in the Empire State. A sprinter by trade, he won 33 races--19 of which were stakes--and earned $2,085,408. Say Florida Sandy stands at stud at Buckridge Farm near Stuyvesant, N.Y.

Personal Flag also sired other graded winners Ave's Flag, Euchre, Prospector's Flag, It's Personal, Lil Personalitee (in Canada), and Silky Feather, who placed in four New York grade I stakes. Personal Flag's progeny earnings are approaching $32 million.

Personal Flag enjoyed his best season as a 5-year-old when he captured the 1988 Suburban (gr. I) and Nassau County (gr. II) Handicaps and placed in three grade I stakes. Those accomplishments and those of his unbeaten full sister, Personal Ensign, were enough for their dam, Grecian Banner (by Hoist the Flag), to be voted Kentucky Broodmare of the Year.

During his career, Personal Flag also won Widener (gr. I) and Queens County (gr. III) Handicaps. He retired with eight wins from 24 starts and earnings of $1,258,924.

Personal Flag is represented by 27 juveniles of 2005 and five yearlings.
