Southern Image Purchased by Taylor Made/WinStar Venture

Three time grade I winner Southern Image, who has earned more than $1.8 million, has been purchased by the Taylor Made / WinStar Venture for stallion duty.

"Southern Image was never off the board in his entire career and he is the only horse to retire to stud for 2006 to have won more than one $1 million race," said Taylor Made vice president of stallions Ben Taylor. "He won three grade 1 events from 7-to-10 furlongs, won five consecutive races and showed absolutely brilliant speed."

A winner of his only start at two, Southern Image returned at three to win the grade I Malibu Stakes and then at four won the Pimlico Special (gr. I) and Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I).

Southern Image will be available for inspection during the Keeneland September yearling sales at Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky. It has not yet been determined at which farm the horse will stand for stud duty.

Taylor Made and WinStar will be setting stallion fees the first week of November.

Southern Image, who was based in Southern California with trainer Mike Machowsky, retired with six wins from eight starts and earnings just over $1,843,750 while racing for the partnership of Blahut Stables, Kagele Brothers, and Allen Templer.

"He was one of those rare individuals who could display sprinter/miler speed, winning a grade I at seven furlongs and then carry that speed the American classic distance of 1 1/4 miles," Machowsky said. "Horses just don't do that these days. He faced all comers, dancing every dance, and in the process defeated over 20 stakes winners."

Arthur I. Appleton bred the son of Halo's Image from the Dixieland Band mare Pleasant Dixie.
