In Summation, Running Lass Win at Calder

(from Calder Race Course reports)
In Summation and Running Lass took their respective divisions of the Florida Stallion Stakes at sloppy Calder Race Course Saturday, headlining a full program of races for 2-year-olds.

Waterford Farm's undefeated In Summation won the $125,000 Affirmed Division of the FSS at Calder during the Juvenile Showcase and extended his win streak to five for trainer Frank Gomez.

The colt by Put It Back won the seven-furlong race by 2 3/4 lengths over Blazing Rate with Old Town Pond third. He covered the distance in 1:24.87 over a sloppy track.

In Summation was ridden by jockey Manoel Cruz, who earlier in the day guided Running Lass to win the Susan's Girl Division of the FSS. He won three other races on the undercard.

Sent off as the 1-to-9 favorite, In Summation paid $2.20, 2.10, and 2.10. Blazing Rate returned $2.60 and 2.10; Old Town Pond paid $2.10 to show.

In Summation is two-thirds of the way to a sweep of the Florida Stallion Stakes. In the 24-year history of the program, five horses have swept the open divisions of the FSS, most recently Sir Oscar in 2003. Gomez trained two horses to sweeps of the series: Smile in 1984 and Naked Greed in 1991. This year's FSS series concludes with the "Festival of the Sun" Oct. 15. The open division is the $400,000 In Reality.

William Condren and Michael Sherman's Running Lass won the $125,000 Susan's Girl, also bringing her two-thirds of the way to a sweep of the FSS for 2-year-old fillies at Calder.

It was a hard-fought victory for the front-running daughter of Running Stag as she held onto the lead by just a head at the wire over a fast-closing Prospect of Love. Siren Cove finished three-quarters of a length back in third.

Trained by Angel Salinas, Running Lass covered the seven furlongs in 1:26.09 over a sloppy track.

Sent off as the 2-to-5 favorite, Running Lass paid $2.80, 2.60, and 2.10. Prospect of Love returned $9.80 and 2.10, while Siren Cove paid $2.10 to show.
