Laity Rocks Miller Lite Cradle by 11 3/4 Lengths

Claiborne Farm's pacesetting Laity shook loose from favored Dawn of War at the head of the stretch and rolled to an impressive 11 3/4-length win in the $200,000 Miller Lite Cradle for 2-year-olds at River Downs Monday.

Ridden by Corey Lanerie, the homebred son of Pulpit-Tour (by Forty Niner), earned $120,000 in his first start against winners for trainer Frank Brothers. The final time for the 1 1/16-mile Cradle was 1:43 3/5.

The bay colt broke his maiden at River Downs Aug. 5 by a half-length in his first start at the 1 1/16-mile distance. The time that day was the same as Monday's. In his only previous start, Laity finished seventh at Churchill Downs going 5 1/2 furlongs June 25.

Lanerie hustled Laity to the front ahead of Acts Like a King shortly after the start and Laity clipped off fractions of :23 3/5, :47 and 1:10 4/5. Dawn of War, the 17-10 favorite ridden by Dean Sarvis, moved to challenge on the far turn but was easily repelled when Lanerie asked Laity for a response. They were ahead by six lengths after a mile in 1:37 and drew off from there.

The third choice in the field of eight, Laity paid $10, $5 and $3.80. Dawn of War returned $3.40 and $2.60. Acts Like a King was a length farther behind in third, paying $3.

Bellamy Road won last year's Cradle.
