Singhalese Looms Large in Pucker Up

(from Arlington Park report)
Singhalese, winner of the grade I Del Mar Oaks in Southern California last month, has been installed as the 6-5 morning-line favorite in Saturday's $200,000 Pucker Up Stakes (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-old fillies on the turf at Arlington Park.

The 1 1/8-mile test is one of three graded stakes races that highlight the track's closing weekend.

A British-bred daughter of Singspiel, Gould Family Trust and Paul Dixon's Singhalese made her North American debut this spring after having raced in her native country as a 2-year-old. In addition to her victory in the Del Mar Oaks, the sophomore filly finished third behind Cesario and Melhor Ainda in the American Oaks (gr. IT) at Hollywood Park on July 3. She is trained by James Cassidy, who won last year's Pucker Up with Ticker Tape, and she will be ridden Saturday by Mike Smith.

Among those slated to face Singhalese in the Pucker Up are three other graded stakes placed fillies – Elkhorn Oaks Racing's Gallant Secret, Everest Stables' Isla Cozzene and Richard L. Duchossois' Royal Copenhagen.

Gallant Secret, third in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) at Churchill Downs on May 6, is making her turf debut in the Pucker Up Stakes. In her last trip to the post, the daughter of Menifee ran second in the $100,000 Arlington Oaks on the main track. Jesse Campbell will ride the James Jackson trainee.

Isla Cozzene invades from California off a second-place finish to Singhalese in a Del Mar allowance race on Aug. 1. Earlier this year, the Marcelo Polcano-trained daughter of Cozzene was third in the Honeymoon Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIT) at Hollywood Park. Brice Blanc has the mount Saturday.

Royal Copenhagen also ships in from California off back-to-back second-place finishes in stakes competition. Last time out, the daughter of Inchinor was a game runner-up in the San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT) at Del Mar on July 30 after rallying for the place money in the $100,000 Flawlessly Stakes at Hollywood earlier that month. Arlington's leading rider Shaun Bridgmohan picks up the mount for the Laura de Seroux pupil.
