Robert N. Scanlon, a perennial leading 2-year-old sale consignor and operator of the Scanlon Training Center near Williston, Fla., passed away Oct. 13. Along with his wife Connie, and son David, Scanlon broke and provided the early training for many top Thoroughbreds. Sales graduates from the Scanlon Training Center include Afleet Alex, the 2005 Preakness and Belmont winner, both grade I; Lion Heart, the 2004 Haskell (gr. I) winner; Songandaprayer, a grade I winner and a leading 2005 freshman sire; Unbridled's Song, a Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner and leading sire; and Artax, a champion and Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner. Earlier this year, a horse sold by Scanlon shattered the record for a 2-year-old in training sold at public auction when he sold a Tale of the Cat colt out of Carry All for $5.2 million.
