Trickle of Gold Speeds Away in Safely Kept BC

John Murphy Sr.'s frontrunner Trickle of Gold turned on the afterburners and sped away to a three-length triumph in the $131,500 Safely Kept Breeders' Cup (gr. III) for 3-year-old fillies Sunday at Laurel Park.

Unbeaten in her last four starts, the Kentucky homebred daughter of Formal Gold put away a pesky Partners Due down the lane in the six-furlong test and finished the course in 1:10.45 over the fast main track. Post time favorite Maddalena tracked the top two into deep stretch and caught the tiring Partners Due to take second by one length.

The winner paid $4.80, $2.40, and $2.10 as the 7-5 second choice in the field of five. Jeremy Rose rode Trickle of Gold, who earned $90,000 for the victory, with steady handling for trainer Michael Gorham.

"The toughest part about her is she stands on her back end in the gate," Rose said. "After that, she's pretty easy to ride. She's quick out of there. She had no problem when (Partners Due) came up next to her. She doesn't have to have the lead; she's just that much faster than they are."

"As a two-year-old, she had problems getting loose in the post parade," Gorham related. "We turned her out and she kind of matured and after that she's come back super. I don't think she's ready for the Breeders' Cup level right now. We'll pick our spots and, hopefully, keep her on the roll that she's on."

Maddalena returned $2.20 and $2.10.

Partners Due was $2.10 to show.

Starleena and Lady Dynasty trailed.

Ebony Star and Slew Motion scratched.
