Paul Kuerzi, who has served as vice president and general manager of Ellis Park since 1999, has announced plans to leave the Henderson, Ky., track at the end of the year. Kuerzi, 63, cited health concerns and a desire to spend more time with his family for his decision to retire from his Ellis Park post. Track owner Churchill Downs Inc., has not named a successor to Kuerzi. "My years at Ellis Park have been among the most enjoyable and satisfying of my career, but I have decided that it is time to focus more attention and time on my children and grandchildren," said Kuerzi.
His wife, Sue, will continue in her roles as manager of Ellis Park's community relations, customer relations, and the Twin Spires Club. Kuerzi joined Ellis Park as vice president and general manager in June 1999 after spending three years as director of operations at Hoosier Park, Churchill Downs Incorporated's track in Anderson, Ind. Before that, the Louisville native served as director of mutuels and simulcasting at Sam Houston Park and director of operations at Louisiana Downs.
