Hurricane Run Voted Cartier European Horse of the Year

Hurricane Run, whose five races this year included the Budweiser Irish Derby (Ire-I) and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I), was named European Horse Of The Year at the 2005 Cartier Racing Awards, which were presented at the Four Seasons Hotel in London's West End Wednesday, Nov. 16.

The 3-year-old star of Montjeu's first crop who is trained in France by Andre Fabre, remains in training for 2006. He took the Cartier Horse of the Year Award from Azamour, Divine Proportions, Shamardal and Westerner.

Hurricane Run also won the Cartier 3-Year-Old Colt Award, finishing ahead of Dubawi, Motivator, Scorpion and Shamardal.

The Aga Khan's Azamour was named Cartier Older Horse of the Year. Trained by John Oxx in Ireland, the son of Night Shift won the Prince of Wales's Stakes (Eng-I) at Royal Ascot at York and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Eng-I) at Newbury before finishing third in the John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf at Belmont Park. The other nominees in this category were Alcazar, Alexander Goldrun, Starcraft and Westerner.

Divine Proportions, a daughter of Kingmambo who was last year's Cartier 2-Year-Old Filly, gained the Cartier 3-Year-Old Filly Award this time around. Trained by Pascal Bary for the Niarchos family, the filly won two French Classics -- the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas, Fr-I) and the Prix de Diane (French Oaks, Fr-I), as well as the Group One Prix d'Astarte (Fr-I) at Deauville before her career came to a premature end when she sustained a tendon injury in a race. Her rivals in the Cartier 3-Year-Old Filly Award were Eswarah, Maids Causeway, Shawanda and Virginia Waters.

Ireland's champion trainer Aidan O'Brien won both Cartier Awards for 2-Year-Olds categories. George Washington, a dual group I winner at the Curragh, outpolled Amadeus Wolf, stablemate Horatio Nelson, Red Clubs and Sir Percy to be named Cartier 2-Year-Old Colt while in the race for Cartier 2-Year-Old Filly, Prix Marcel Boussac (Fr-I) heroine Rumplestiltskin came out ahead of Donna Blini, Flashy Wings, Nannina and Silca's Sister.

The eight horse awards were decided by a structured combination of points achieved in pattern races, the views of racing journalists on Cartier's racing panel, and votes from readers of Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph. The pattern races count towards 40% of the total, with the Cartier racing panel's deliberations also having a 40% share and the votes of the newspaper readers making up the final 20%.

Also presented at the dinner was the Daily Telegraph Award of Merit for the person or persons who, in the opinion of the 20-strong Cartier Jury, have done the most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months. This year's award went to Henry Cecil, the 10-time British champion flat trainer.

Cecil has trained the winners of 32 European classics, including all five English classics, and has saddled more than 3,000 individual winners.
