Shadeed, an $800,000 Keeneland July yearling, won four of seven starts and earned $278,652. Racing for Sheikh Maktoum, he won three other stakes in England, including the group II Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, and ran third in the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT). He was bred in Kentucky by Cherry Valley Farm and The Gamely Corp.Shadeed was produced from the Damascus mare Continual.
Shadeed, an English champion miler and successful sire, was euthanized Nov. 13 because of complications from illness. The 23-year-old son of Nijinsky II was buried at Sheikh Maktoum's Gainsborough Farm near Versailles, Ky., his home for 19 years.Shadeed, whose big win came in the 1985 General Accident Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I), sired 15 stakes winners, several of which were champions. Shadayid was a champion 2-year-old filly in England and France, and an English mile classic winner. Another filly, Sayyedati, was a classic winner and multiple champion in England, and a champion in Ireland. Free Thinker was an Italian champion.In North America, Shadeed was represented by Canadian classic winner Alydeed, who earned $930,689, and New York grade II winner Citadeed, third in the 1995 Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Shadeed's progeny earnings are $13.6 million.
