Delaware Park Handle Declines 5.3% in 2005

(from Delaware Park release)
In spite of a slight increase in on-track wagering, Delaware Park's overall handle declined 5.32% at the meeting that ended Nov. 13.

The 2005 season ended with a combined handle of $235,279,675. The live on-track handle increased 1.84%, while the simulcast-out handle decreased 5.89%.

A contributing factor to the overall wagering decline was the East Coast strangles outbreak, hindering transport of many racehorses to Delaware.

Preakness and Belmont (both gr. I) winner Afleet Alex was the highlight of 2005. Alex began his career at Delaware Park and calls the historic racetrack home.

"Alex and his team gave us a truly spectacular year," said chief operating officer Bill Fasy. "We are extremely proud of his extraordinary achievements."
