Lael Stables' Barbaro broke alertly, stalked a 45-1 pacesetter to the far turn and then shot to the lead and to an easy score in the $125,000 Laurel Futurity for 2-year-olds over the firm turf at Laurel Park.Barbaro covered the 1-1/16 mile distance in 1:40.17 under jockey Jose Caraballo, who was registering his third victory of the afternoon. Diabolical took the runner-up spot, eight lengths behind the winner. Exton was third.The winner paid $7.60. Barbaro, a son of Dynaformer, is trained by Michael Matz, who also won the second race this afternoon with Caraballo as his rider.Lawrence Goichman's J'ray swept to an easy score in the $125,000 Selima Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, contested over the turf.Under a patient ride by jockey Jerry Bailey, the daughter of Distant View tracked the leaders from seventh place while racing widest down the backstretch. J'ray swept around the leaders and galloped out to a widening 3 3/4-length victory. Edgar Prado brought Nice Nelly up the rail to gain the place and frontrunner Rasta Farian finished third.The winner finished the 1-1/16th mile distance in 1:41.87 over the firm turf. She paid $4.40 as the choice in the field of eleven for trainer Todd Pletcher.John Murphy's Trickle of Gold raced to the front under a stranglehold by jockey Jeremy Rose, who nursed her speed the rest of the way to cruise home a convincing winner in the $100,000 Anne Arundel Stakes.Trickle of Gold was taking her sixth straight. Rose has been aboard for the last five for trainer Michael Gorham. The pair covered the one-mile distance in 1:37.01 and won by 1 1/2 lengths over Sticky. Lexi Star finished third.
Trickle of Gold paid $3.40 as a deserving favorite. Her previous two victories came in the Safely Kept Stakes (gr. III) at Laurel and the Ghost Stakes at Delaware Park.(Chart, Equibase)
