With Record Number of Offerings, Keeneland Sale Begins Monday

A record 2,508 head will be offered when the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale begins Monday, Jan. 9. The sale runs through Sunday, Jan. 15, with sessions starting at 10 a.m.(ET) daily.

Comprising the 2,508 horses cataloged are 1,290 broodmares and broodmare prospects, 924 yearlings, 268 horses of racing age, 22 stallions or stallion prospects, three stallion shares, and a lifetime breeding right to Medaglia d'Oro .

Consigned to the sale as a racing or broodmare prospect is the multiple stakes winning mare Island Fashion. By Petionville, Island Fashion recorded wins in the Alabama and La Brea Stakes, and the Santa Monica Handicap, all arade I races. She is consigned to the sale by Pope McLean (Crestwood Farm), agent for Everest Stables, Inc. (Major Reduction - Phase II).

Among the broodmares offered for sale is Elbaaha, dam of Electrocutionist, winner of the Juddmonte International Stakes (Eng-I) and Gran Premio di Milano (It-I) in 2005. Consigned by Indian Creek Farm (Dave C. Parrish, Jr.), agent, Elbaaha is in foal to leading European sire Montjeu.

The January sale also features a yearling filly from the last crop sired by the recently deceased Danzig. The filly, out of the Sky Classic mare Isabella Rose, is consigned by Paramount Sales, agent.

Sires represented by broodmares in foal or yearlings include Awesome Again , Carson City, Cozzene, Danehill Dancer, Deputy Minister, Distorted Humor , Dixie Union, Dixieland Band, Dynaformer, El Prado, Elusive Quality, Forestry, Fusaichi Pegasus , Giant's Causeway , Gone West, Grand Slam, Kingmambo, Mineshaft , Pleasantly Perfect, Pulpit, Smarty Jones , Songandaprayer, Speightstown , Stephen Got Even, Tale of the Cat , Theatrical, Tiznow  and Unbridled's Song.

Among the stallions whose first foals arrived in 2005 that are represented in the sale include Aldebaran, Century City, Harlan's Holiday, Hold That Tiger, Johar, Kafwain, Posse, Proud Citizen, Sky Mesa , and Vindication.

Last year 1,361 horses sold for a total of $53,418,000. The average price was $39,249, and the median was $13,000.
