Stakes Producers Fantastic Girl, Sophisticated Girl Euthanized

Fantastic Girl and Sophisticated Girl, who resided as pensioners in the same field at Betty Mabee's Golden Eagle Farm near Ramona, Calif., were euthanized in November because of the infirmities of old age. Both Fantastic Girl, who was 29, and Sophisticated Girl, four years younger, raced for Mabee and her late husband, John Mabee.

Homebred Fantastic Girl, who was from the second crop of champion Riva Ridge, won seven of 18 races, including the Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar, and earned $109,300. Four of her 11 registered foals were stakes winners--Fantastic Look, Fantastic Ways, Majestic Style, and Bravo Fox (in Ireland).

The best of the group, Fantastic Look, won three stakes, including the Fantasy Stakes (gr. I) at Oaklawn Park, and was grade I-placed four times. Owned by Betty Mabee, she is the dam of three stakes winners, including grade I winner Designed for Luck. Fantastic Girl was produced from the Tom Fool mare Lady of Elegance.

Sophisticated Girl, who was bred in Maryland by Dr. and Mrs. G.G. Meredith, won two of a dozen starts, was grade I-placed, and earned $122,066. Her 10 registered foals included grade II winner Doneraile Court, now a successful Kentucky stallion, and three graded/group stakes-placed runners. One of them, Dancing Tribute, is the dam of grade II winner Souvenir Copy, who also has proved successful as a stallion and stands at Golden Eagle. Two other daughters of Sophisticated Girl (Stop the Music--Close Control, by Dunce) are stakes producers.
