Healthy Addiction Wins Paseana; Pick Six Carryover Soars

Fueled by a Pick Six carryover from Monday of $185,319, Santa Anita's total Pick Six pool reached an astonishing $1,377,938 today and nobody tabbed six winners, resulting in a two-day carryover into Friday of $847,509.

Gramsey, a 5-1 longshot, survived a steward's inquiry to defeat even-money favorite Sunette in the eighth and final race, which keyed the massive carryover.

Making her first start since finishing last in the grade I Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff on Oct. 29 at Belmont Park, Healthy Addiction earned a hard fought victory over four rivals in today's $79,750 Paseana Stakes. Carded as the second race, The Paseana was for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles.

Ridden by Garrett Gomez and trained by John Sadler, Healthy Addiction stalked early pacesetter Freakin Streakin to the far turn, then dispatched a stout bid by Musica Si and prevailed by two lengths while getting the distance in 1:44.95.

"She runs well here in California and we're going to keep her here for the rest of the year," said Sadler. "She just doesn't run well out of town. We're going to run here in the (Feb. 1) Santa Maria and then we'll look at the Santa Margarita in March."

Gomez, who notched his meet-leading sixth stakes win, was pleased with the way the race set up. "I was glad to see Martin (Pedroza, aboard Freakin Streakin) go. We expected his filly would show the most speed. What really concerned me the most was Mandella's filly (Musica Si). She sat right off my hip and when I looked back at the 3/8 pole, she was still running," he said. "My filly ran really good and she should move forward off of this."

Healthy Addiction, a 5-year-old Kentucky bred mare by Boston Harbor, is owned by Pamela Ziebarth and she posted her seventh win from 16 starts. The winners' share of $47,580 boosted her career earnings to $435,837. Dispatched as the odds on 3-5 favorite, she paid $3.20 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. Freakin Streakin battled back gamely, returning $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Chilean bred Musica Si, making her U.S. debut, paid $2.10 to show.
