Barretts January Mixed Sale Posts Increases

The Barretts January mixed auction experienced moderate growth in gross revenue and a big gain in average price during its two-day run that ended Tueday in Southern California.

The sale company reported final figures of 441 horses sold, a gross of $3,481,300, an average of $7,894, and a median of $3,500. Compared to The Blood-Horse's statistics for the auction in 2004, when 492 horses were sold, the gross rose 8.3% from $3,213,100 and the average increased 20.9% from $6,531. The median remained the same at $3,500 while the buy-back rate climbed from 15.5% last year to 18.5% this year.

The results for the final session Tuesday were 201 horses sold, a gross of $1,077,700, an average of $5,362, and a median of $3,000. The buy-back rate was 25.6%.

Danish Dessert, a 13-year-old winning Regal Classic mare in foal to In Excess, brought Tuesday's top price of $44,000. NW Management purchased her from NexStar Ranch, agent. Produced from the winning Viceregal mare Stray Flight, Danish Dessert is a half-sister to stakes winners Ever Steady and Sparrow Lake, who also is a stakes producer. She also is a half-sister to stakes producer Stray Away and a full sister to Danish Alamode, the dam of added-money winner Texcess, who sold for $300,000 during the Barretts auction's first session.
