Misty Rosette Makes Old Hat Look Easy in Slop

Sonia Chapman and Stuart Tsujimoto's 3-year-old filly Misty Rosette remained undefeated in her three starts after splashing home a four-length winner over Swap Fliparoo in Saturday's $100,000 Old Hat Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park.

A Kentucky-bred daughter of Stormin Fever, the James Chapman-trained Misty Rosette pressed the pacesetter Somethinaboutbetty from the start before taking command midway on the turn of the 6 ½-furlong test. The bay filly pulled away with relative ease over the 'sloppy' track, passing the wire in 1:16:03 under regular rider Sebastian Madrid.

"This race was easy," said Madrid. "She's a good filly. She's got speed. She rates, and she's very easy to ride. Today, she put me in the race right away."

A $15,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, Misty Rosette had won her only two previous starts at Calder and Tampa Bay Downs last month, but still paid $12.40, $6.20, and $4.20 as the fourth choice of the public. Misty Rosette increased her earnings to $98,700.

"She's been running like this all along," Chapman said. "We haven't even asked her to open up yet. If we want her to win around two turns, she needs to be doing things the way she's doing them now.

"Our goal with her is to make the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). We'll sit down and see the schedule and see where we go from here. I wasn't worried about her on this track, because she's bigger and stronger than most 3-year-old fillies right now."

Swap Fliparoo, ridden by Javier Castellano, returned $6 and $2.80. Smart N Pretty, with Mark Guidry aboard, was along for third, 1 ¼ lengths behind the runner-up in the field of six sophomore fillies.

Marie and Aaron Jones' 9-5 favorite Yachats checked in fourth, followed by Miraculous Miss, who clipped off an opening quarter mile of :21 3/5 before giving way to Misty Rosette after they completed the half-mile in :44.
