Too Much Bling Stands Out in San Vicente

Too Much Bling heads a field of eight in the $150,000 San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-olds going seven furlongs at Santa Anita Park on Sunday.

The Ohio-bred gray son of Rubiano, trained by Bob Baffert for owners Stonerside Stable and Blazing Meadows Farm, blazed to a four-length win in the Jan. 8 San Miguel Stakes while running six furlongs in 1:08 2/5. Garrett Gomez rides the probable favorite.

As a 2-year-old, Too Much Bling ran third in the Hopeful (gr. I) at Saratoga and fifth in Belmont Park's Champagne (gr. I) five weeks later, after setting the pace in both races.

This year's San Vicente lacks sophomores with much experience, making Too Much Bling a clear favorite. Dating to 1990, the San Vicente has produced four winners of the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) including Mister Frisky (1990), Dinard (1991), Free House (1997), and Came Home (2002).

The Florida-bred Changing Weather comes off a second-place finish in the six-furlong Sunshine Millions Dash, 7 1/2 lengths behind D Stoops, for trainer Eoin Harty.

The San Vicente also attracts a couple of other San Miguel runners, Bound to Be M V P, a Washington invader that finished third, and Peace Chant, who ran fourth.

Edgar Prado takes over the mount on Peace Chant, the Richard Mandella-trained son of War Chant out of the brilliant sprinter Safely Kept. Peace Chant won his only other start by 3 1/4 lengths over maiden allowance foes going 6 1/2 furlongs at Hollywood Park Dec. 3.

Totally Gone, who will be ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, won his only start by 6 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita Dec. 31, covering 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03 1/5. Doug O'Neill trains the Florida-bred gelding by Gone West.
