Record Price at Australia Yearling Sale

Just about every keen judge of horseflesh in Australia got it wrong as the curtain fell on the main sessions at Adelaide's Magic Millions Yearling Sale Thursday in Australia.

Everyone was tipping a record, and they all thought a colt by Elusive Quality  would take Adelaide to new heights.

In fact, there was even a nationwide online competition conducted by Magic Millions to rank the top 10 from this sale -- the winner whose top 10 fetched the most by aggregate was to be richly feted with prizes.

Hundreds of entries came in -- nearly all had Lot 505 on top. But, it was not to be. The bidding stopped at $200,000. Aquanita Racing landed the colt from the multiple stakes winning Don't Say Halo mare Halo Again, who has thrown five successive group winners.

For the record, the $200,000 made him the fifth highest. The highest, was in fact an all time Adelaide record, and went to the bid of local horseman Leon Macdonald, one of South Australia's legendary trainers. He made history when he went to $340,000 for a colt by the red-hot Widden Stud sire General Nediym, who is having a bumper 2-year-old crop season this year and is the sire of the ruling $4 million Golden Slipper favorite.

Macdonald outlasted another of Morphettville's leading trainers, Mark Kavanagh, to buy the colt. The first foal of the dual city winning Marscay mare Classic Status, the colt was offered at the sale by Mill Park, acting as agents for the breeders of the youngster.

Macdonald knew as soon as he saw the yearling he wanted the colt in his stable.

"He's the nicest horse here," Macdonald said. "He's beautifully balanced and very athletic."

He didn't expect he'd have to set a new all time sale record to secure the cracking type, however.

"I thought he'd make $300,000," Macdonald smiled.

The previous record of $330,000 was set last year when the Fusaichi Pegasus colt now known as Tipungwuti was sold after a long bidding dual.

It is the second time in three days that a Mill Park graduate has sold for a top price. On Tuesday a filly by General Nediym was sold for $250,000.
